French Toast Ham Melt

A delightful blend of sweet French toast and savory ham and cheese, perfect for brunch or an indulgent dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices thick bread (brioche or sourdough)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (or non-dairy milk)
  • 4 slices ham (or roasted portobello mushrooms for vegetarian)
  • 4 slices cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or pepper jack)
  • Butter (for frying)
  • Maple syrup (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the egg mixture: Whisk eggs and milk in a bowl, adding a pinch of salt and optional vanilla.
  2. Dip the bread: Coat both sides of each slice in the egg mixture.
  3. Heat the pan: Melt butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  4. Cook the bread: Fry soaked bread until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes each side.
  5. Add the filling: Layer ham and cheese between two slices of crisped bread to form a sandwich.
  6. Melt it: Cook the sandwich in the skillet until cheese melts and bread is crispy, about 2-3 minutes each side.
  7. Slice and serve: Let the sandwich rest, then slice in half and drizzle with maple syrup.

Notes

Let the bread soak just long enough to absorb the egg mixture without becoming soggy. Experiment with leftover ingredients for added flavors.
